Description
Vitamin B2 is also known as riboflavin and was discovered in 1930. Like all B vitamins, it is water-soluble. It is not produced by our body and therefore must be obtained through diet. Rich sources of riboflavin include milk, cheese, beef, eggs and whole grains. However, 22% of women and 12% of men receive amounts lower than the recommended intake. The worsening of riboflavin deficiency can manifest clinically with angular cheilitis, as well as tearing, burning sensation and itching in the eyes.
Riboflavin participates in the production of energy from the burning of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and contributes to the restoration of the continuity of mucous membranes and the production of red blood cells. Also, both the production of thyroid hormones and the production of immune system cells depend on the presence of riboflavin.
Finally, riboflavin actively participates in the body’s processes that produce some of the antioxidant compounds that protect cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, for this reason riboflavin is considered important for maintaining eye health.
